Making the choice to stop relaxing your child’s hair is an amazing opportunity to teach your child about self love, their natural beauty, and how to love and care for their hair properly. If you’ve been wondering exactly what you need to do to transition your child to having gorgeous natural hair, keep reading!

1.Do your Research

It is imperative that you understand how to take care of your child’s hair before you begin the process. Natural hair and relaxed hair is very different. Natural hair requires a ton of love, care and detangling! Do your research first. Youtube will be a great help to you along with checking out natural hair blogs and reading all about natural hair! Make sure to check out the Thank God I’m Natural Hair Book for a great guide on transitioning.

2. Stop Relaxing

The moment you stop relaxing your child’s hair is when the transitioning process begins. You will notice the difference in the texture of their new growth and their relaxed hair. It may start to become more difficult to style their hair at this time because of the two different hair textures. Throw away any old relaxers you have lying around the house in case you get tempted to relax. Relaxing only a portion of your child’s hair is still relaxing. You have to be ready to fully commit to helping your child transition to natural for the process to begin.

3. Use Transitioning Hairstyles

One great style is braids! Braids are a great way to not only keep your child’s hair protected from breakage and damage but also to effortlessly blend the two hair textures. Keeping your child’s hair braided as often as possible during this time will help maintain growth and curb breakage as their hair continues to grow out their relaxer. Another great style are twists and twist outs! Avoiding heat is also imperative to maintaining the integrity of your child’s natural hair and prevent heat damage. Staying away from heat styling will help you become more familiar with your child’s hair texture as well as teach you how to properly care for and style their hair in it’s natural state.

4. Switch to Natural Hair Products

Hair care products for relaxed hair and natural hair are very different. It is important that you start paying attention to the ingredients in the products you are putting in your child’s hair. Natural hair requires a ton of moisture so avoiding drying sulphates and parabens are imperative! tgin’s natural hair care line is perfect for transitioning your child’s hair and provides adequate moisture, protection and is perfect for styling and defining curls!

5. Stick to a Schedule

Sticking to a schedule can greatly assist you with caring for your child’s hair. Natural hair takes time to care for but it definitely becomes easier with time. Set a schedule for wash days and styling so you are well prepared to properly wash, style and detangle your little angels hair! The process may be long but it is extremely gratifying to teach your child to love their natural hair!
