“You Can Touch My Hair,” was a two-day event that was launched in New York’s Union Square, by the site Un’ruly, allowing people to touch the hair of black women. Since this texture of hair is not very present in the media (e.g. magazines, movies, and television) it has sparked curiosity of others wanting to touch it. A lot of questions were brought up after the event and many wondered what its real purpose was.
So I guess the question is how do you all feel? Black hair touching has been a very sensitive topic for years. Some feel uncomfortable with it, some feel violated by it, and some just disapprove of it all together. Would you have attended the event and allowed people to touch your hair? What kind of message do you think this event sends?
